Most of us are familiar with this scene from  Snow White  in which the queen asks the mirror for answers. In the new year I would like to encourage us all to do something very similar. It may be a bit intimidating for some of us, but it will be well worth it and will lead to an increased sense of self-satisfaction and growth as the year progresses.  Before we get to this fun, enlightening and easy new tool, allow me to share a quick back story on how this came to my attention. Margie and I attended my work’s Christmas party last night. Not only is it rare that my work actually has a get together, but we had the opportunity to meet and talk to some new people as well. It is interesting what topics can come up when you share conversations with new people. Especially at the end of the evening after a few cocktails have been consumed. We had a pleasant rain in the middle of the night. Not very hard. Just a touch of hail but it was minimal, and although it was a thunder and lightning storm, even that was very quiet. When I first went to the Azores, it only rained at night. I thought, “what a wonderful idea. How do they get the weather to cooperate like that?” Actually, later, when I move there with my family, I learned I was just lucky the first time. This thought brings up another good question. How often do we see a rare occurrence when we are someplace new, and just think that that’s normal for the place we are? This is a fair question, which grows based on assumptions.  The question also works both ways. How often when visiting another area do we see something that’s normal for them, and consider the occurrence rare? Both questions are based on what we know at the time. And, both thoughts could have right or wrong answers depending on whether or not we have all the facts....

An agricultural reference, it refers to the offering usually given during the first part of the harvest – but it means much more than that. The firstfruits were not just fruits, but the best of the produce of the land, given to God as an indication that all of it belonged to him, to secure his blessing on the rest of the harvest. When Paul calls Christ the “firstfruits” he has all of this in mind, and likely more. What, then, does this term add to our understanding of Jesus’ resurrection? 1. A Life of Honouring God: Holy Communion and Tithing Do we take holy communion for healing? No, because that is as good as saying we take it to receive the remission of sins. No we already have the remission of sins, and therefore we already possess healing. Just as far as sin is from you so is sickness. We take the holy communion to remember and honour Christ for giving us those gifts. Now this will be a very long post filled with deep revelations. Only the mature can take them because it has to do with giving something. Have you noticed in the natural that children are naturally selfish. All they do is receive from the parent and never give back and that is fine because they are children. But a time comes when they would have to grow and instinctively a desire comes to give back to the parents out of appreciation. Can they ever repay back the parents?
